The Miner’s Institute, A Welcome Commitment to Restoration and Planning Consent Granted

I am pleased that my painstaking research into the history of our Moorthorpe Miner’s Institute was recognised in the heritage report, submitted as part of the now granted planning application to continue the conversion of the building into accommodation.

Whilst I remain sad that the building has seemingly no obvious use as a community asset I am pleased that the application made commitments to restore the front elevation, repair the lintel and other important features externally and gives the building a respite, to ensure it is made safe and preserved at least in some capacity.

The future of the Miner’s Institute forms part of my commitment to the people of South Elmsall, South Kirkby and Moorthorpe to explore the creation of a local plan to preserve and protect our heritage. Commitments made as part of the planning process include the removal of the modern, tatty signage, the restoration of the lintel and original decorated stone carvings, the removal of paint and repointing, all very welcome.

I thank the owners/developers for their commitments to this long term aim, their sensitive approach to planning and their commitment to help preserve the fabric of an important landmark. I also thank their heritage statement which you can read here and clearly quoted my own research, report and photos in detail.

What are your memories of this?
